Saving your apps to gadgets like smartphones and tablets

If you have access to a mobile device, you can use it to run your Bitsbox apps. Any modern mobile device will work, as long as it has a web browser (like Safari, Chrome, and others) that can open web pages. Android phones and tablets, iPhones, iPads, Kindle Fire tablets, and Microsoft gadgets all work great.

Step 1: Transfer your app from your computer to your gadget.

The easiest way to transfer your app to your device is to use QR code software to read it off your computer screen and open it on your device. Here's how:
  1. Install QR reader software on your phone or tablet. (You only have to do this once.)
Need a recommendation? Read this: What QR code reader app should I use?
  2. In Bitsbox, open the app you want to transfer.
  3. Click the sharing icon in the upper right corner of your screen.
  4. Open the QR reader on your mobile device. (See Step 1 if you don't have one yet.)
  5. "Zap" the QR code in the Bitsbox Sharing panel with your device. Your app should open on your device, ready to play!

Step 2: Save your app on your gadget.

Bitsbox apps are really just web pages. Most mobile devices let you save a web page to your home screen so that you can easily get back to it. Saving a Bitsbox app to your home screen in this way makes it look and feel like a real "native" app. Here's how:

If you're using an iOS (Apple) device:

  1. Transfer your app to your gadget. Follow the instructions in Step 1 (above) if you don't know how.
  2. There's a good chance your QR reader opened your app in its own web browser. To save your app to your home screen, you need to first open it in Safari. Tap the sharing button at the bottom of the screen and choose Open in Safari.
  3. With your app open in Safari, tap the sharing icon and choose Add to Home Screen.
  4. Edit the label for your app (if you like) and tap Add. Your app now has its own icon on your gadget's home screen!

If you're using an Android device:

  1. Transfer your app to your gadget. Follow the instructions at the top of this page if you don't know how.
  2. With your app open in Chrome, tap the menu icon icon (three dots) in the upper-left corner and choose Add to Home Screen.
  3. Edit the label for your app (if you like) and tap Add. Your app now has its own icon on your gadget's home screen!
